Executive Officer
LT. COMMANDER SHOYA LESHAR
NAME: Shoya Leshar
GROUP: Brekkian
SEX: Male
HEIGHT:
WEIGHT:
HAIR COLOUR:
EYE COLOUR:
AGE: 38
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:
Although he is now approaching forty Shoya still looks the way he did when he first joined
the Academy; wavy black hair that stops just short of deep brown eyes that shine with
wisdom, with a slight build that hides a wiry strength and of course the Brekkian
discharging ability. Although his kind normally have a ridged nose an accident when he
was younger meant that when Shoya's nose was repaired afterward, the aesthetics were
not fully restored and so his nose is as smooth as a human's. Off-duty his clothes are
often scruffy and quite lived-in, not exactly looking the part of a well-scrubbed senior
officer; because of this and his youthful looks he is often mistaken for a cadet, a mistake
Shoya doesn't mind. He takes it as a compliment that at thirty-eight he is still as
handsome as when he was eighteen.
Well, not quite handsome. He admits that he could be a little better looking.
PERSONALITY AND LIKES:
Shoya has a wealth of experience hidden behind that youthful façade of his; however he
doesn't like to let people know about it. With years of experience already behind him
Shoya knows a great deal about the workings of the ship, and not just the mechanical
side. He has been described by former crewmates as a part-time counsellor, because he
has an answer for almost every problem, and is always willing to listen and help out.
Some say that his youthful looks weren't all that he kept from his childhood – he has the
playful attitude to go with it! Always making a joke about a situation, no matter how bad
(the joke or the problem!), he can't help but be optimistic in everything he does, and can't
always take things seriously. In his younger days as an NCO and even as Chief Engineer
he wasn't above pulling pranks, and even when he has been called upon to take up the
mantle of command he has pulled pranks as and when he can.
While he does not necessarily disrespect an officer, even as one himself he still holds
them in low regard compared to an NCO; he is not particularly fond of being called 'sir'
either as he 'works for a living,' in his words.
Despite his seemingly-open and friendly manner Shoya prefers to keep his cards close to
his chest, saying much without revealing anything. Harking back to his Academy days
Shoya does not open immediately to anyone, wary of those who make false overtures of
friendship, and as such it takes a while for him to fully trust in someone.
While he has had a long-standing aversion to taking positions of command after the
Gemini incident, his tenure on SB47 made him realise that the incident truly wasn't his
fault. As a result he has become more confident in his abilities to lead, and that was
brought about partially due to the arrival of a certain Lucie Mason. Lucie is a big feature
in his personal life; one of the few survivors from the Gemini, the pair have grown to
become very close friends during the years following the disaster. He once held an
attraction for the woman and can admit that there may be some residual feelings,
however he is a very devout and protective friend and will more than look after her
should he feel the need to. Although Lucie has since recovered from her demons after
their time on '47 and been assigned to a new post, she and Shoya keep in touch regularly.
STRENGTHS:
His Touch. As a Brekkian he can produce a jolt of energy through his hands, and through
years of experience he has been able to alter its intensity, from a weak spark to being
able to fully paralyse his foe. This ability takes its toll, and the more powerful the quicker
he tires, but it has been useful in many a combat situation.

BACKGROUND:
The Brekkians weren't all involved in the trading of drugs to their daughter species;
some disagreed with the way the Brekkians held the Ornanans under their thumb, and
decided to escape from the corruption of their home planet and find a 'better home.'
Shoya Leshar's parents were amongst those people.
Born onboard a privately owned starship, Shoya Leshar spent much of his early life in
space, travelling from starship to Starbase, never staying anywhere for more than a year
at a time. Because his parents were always trying to find work to keep their only son
alive, he never got to see them much, usually left alone or with a variety of babysitters
from many species. This meant that when his parents finally left him behind on Starbase
15 and didn't return for him, he wasn't particularly concerned. In fact, life for him carried
on as before. Up until he was old enough to enter Academy Shoya travelled from place to
place, lending a hand wherever he could, and swiftly built up an expertise in Engineering,
especially 'bodge jobs' and making something out of nothing.
He joined the Academy, and stuck with it for two years before finally getting fed up and
leaving. He claimed that he couldn't standing being stuck in one place all his time – which
was in part true, given his nomadic lifestyle – but the real reason he didn't reveal to
anyone for years. The truth; it was all fake. The people he met there, the people he tried
to befriend, were all acting and just wearing masks, all too afraid to show who they really
were. Of course there were one or two exceptions, but as a whole he couldn't stand the
constant act. So instead he decided to go fast-track and took up a Warrant position.
For Shoya, it was the best thing he could have done. With his expertise he was soon
given his warrant and was given the position of transporter chief on board the Oberth-
class USS Kaye for four years. Although it wasn't the best use of his skills, it gave him a
chance to start the long climb up the promotion ladder, and on to better jobs. After four
years he was put forward by his Chief Engineer for promotion, and not only was he
accepted, he was transferred to the USS Endeavour, a fairly prestigeous posting.
Shoya made good use of his time on the Nebula-class vessel, learning many tricks off the
senior officers, watching the ultra-efficient crew and working hard to slot in and show
them he was just as worthy. It succeeded, and for another three-year stint he was a
highly recommended Damage Control specialist, especially with his skills at fixing
anything with everything to hand. Finally he recommended him for promotion, leading
him to his six-year posting onboard Starbase 7.
However his transfer to the Starbase did not go smoothly; reports of Borg activity along
the border turned out to be fallout from the Borg's second attempt at attacking Earth,
where several smaller Spheres had engaged in border skirmishes to detract attention
from the main assault vessel. The Endeavour so happened to be involved in a battle
against the Sphere, taking heavy damages during the battle; even after the Sphere was
destroyed groups of drones had been transported to the various Starfleet vessels that
were in the area in an attempt to assimalate from the inside out. Narrowly surviving the
invasion thanks to his Brekkian abilities Shoya was finally delivered to his new posting,
feeling a shade older after the harrowing attack.
Again a Damage Control specialist, in some respects Shoya felt at home on the Starbase.
There was always a problem that needed fixing, always a job somewhere in the vast
station, and he seemed constantly busy day and night, leaving a trail of 'Shoya Specials,'
as his improvisations were nicknamed. After three years the promotions list came around
again, and with his wealth of knowledge he was asked whether or not he would want to
take over the Assistant Chief Engineer post, as the current Chief now had his own
command and the Assistant was promoted up to the Chief's slot. Shoya agreed, on the
condition that he could upgrade his warrant to a full commission. Taking into account how
much practical experience he had, the station commander was happy to accept.
The next three years were slightly different for Shoya. He was still seen crawling through
the infrastructure of the station, but he was now more often seen in Engineering proper,
putting his skills to use on a larger scale. He rose to the challenge admirably, often
praised for his ingenuity and ability to think on-the-spot. When he heard of the opening of
Chief Engineer on a starship though, he realised that he needed to change his scenery
and move on again. His nomadic feelings rose up again, and just before his thirty-fifth
birthday he left Starbase 7, ready to fly space once again.
He joined the Gemini at the right moment – she had suffered heavy damage as a result of
their last mission, and he spent a week running his crew into the ground in orderto get the
ship running again in time for their mission to the Kilandren sector, a hotbed of activity
with rivalling planets on the brink of war. Unfortunately the Gemini was caught up at the
outbreak of the war, and straight in the cross-fire.
The ship had been separated with Shoya in the Stardrive as Chief Engineer, but with the
CO and XO unavailable for some mysterious reason it was left to Shoya to take
command of the stardrive just as hostilities broke out. Surrounded by the opposing ships,
what they lacked in technology they made up in sheer numbers, and before long the
Gemini found herself in a very precarious position. Despite their rivalry he was assisted
by the Chief Tactical Officer Raee Noah-James, and together the two managed to pull
through the engagement with minimal losses to the ship. However, at the last moment a
desperate suicide bomber managed to get through the weakened shields and collide
directly with the stardrive hull.
Shoya came to in a medical centre three days later to be told most of the crew, including
the CO and Raee, were killed in the last attack of what was soon to be called the
Kilandran Incident. Although crushed by the news - and the commendation he recieved
for his quick-thinking actiosn doing nothing to soothe the raw wounds - Shoya went about
getting back to work by joining a construction crew working on a new ship, determined to
work through the pain and return to active duty. Finally, with construction over, Shoya
went about searching for a new posting: Starbase Forty-Seven, or simply '47.
The next post turned out to be one of the most interesting and crucial of his already-
impressive tour of duty. Given the rank of full Lieutenant, much to his chargrin, Shoya
was shipped out to Starbase Forty-Seven during it’s tenure under the command of
Captain Morelli. This also so happened to coincide with the coming-out of the
Brotherhood of the Kro’al, in which the base played a vital role.
The first inkling of trouble was when a terrorist attack on the nearby planet of New
Horizons caused the youthful Brekkian to undertake a covert operation, infiltrating the
planet’s mining facility and coming across a sinister plot to overthrow the government of
New Horizons as well as take control, or eliminate, Starfleet’s presence in the area.
Already a shocking enough plan to discover, the main instigator turned out to be none
other than Shoya’s XO from the Gemini.
The pieces fell into place rather quickly for Shoya; their XO had assassinated their
commanding officer and had been the reason for the final attack on the Gemini, therefore
being directly responsible for the loss of over three hundred lives. Shoya managed to
escape the trap he had unwittingly fallen into on New Horizons with a little help from
Morelli and her crew, and relayed the news. Although at this time Starfleet at large was
oblivious to the threat of the Brotherhood, this was just one of many small incidents that
added pieces to the puzzle.
The next sign of trouble was the arrival of both Lieutenant Clare Reith and Lieutenant
Lucie Mason, the former being the niece of Starfleet Intelligence Admiral Reith and the
latter being the only other surviving senior staff member of the Gemini. Charged with the
protection of both women an assault on Starbase 47 by an overwhelming fleet of
Brotherhood vessels resulted in Reith’s capture and Shoya almost being killed by an
agent of the Brotherhood. Rescued by Captain Stevens of Starfleet Intelligence and
returned to SB47 once again, Shoya and Lucie continued to grow closer as friends as
time continued.
Another mission of note during that time was the theft of four starships from a Starfleet
Shipyard that had also been earmarked by the Brotherhood for theft - an irony not lost
on the command crew when given their mission. Given the task of rescuing the decrepit
USS Enigma, a Centaur-class starship nearly destroyed in the Dominion War, Shoya’s
fears and self-doubt after failing to rescue the Gemini when he had taken command were
put to the test when an Orion task-force came to claim the vessels themselves.
In command of a barely space-worthy vessel and the lives of his away team, Shoya and
Lucie eventually managed to bring the vessel up to power and escape the raiders,
however the ship gave up the ghost and died mid-warp, leaving the vessel stranded close
to Orion territory. In the harsh two weeks that followed Shoya and his crew managed to
salvage the vessel and limp back to Starbase Forty-Seven (just) and he was commended
for his efforts. More importantly, however, he managed to begin to shed his hang-ups
over the Gemini.
The next six months saw terrorist attacks on the station, an incursion with the Mirror
Universe, but most crucially it became the rallying point for Captain Jemm’s defence
force. During this time Shoya managed to receive a reprimand on no less than three
occasions; one for disobeying orders, two for breaking into the CO’s office and locking
her out. This would have led to Shoya’s incarceration, demotion, even a court martial, if it
hadn’t of been for the vital role he and his fellow senior officers played in disrupting the
Brotherhood’s plans to turn New Horzions into a new rift generator and therefore
unleashing the might of Species 8472.
In the horrific aftermath of the Brotherhood’s attacks, Captain Morelli and her crew
were commended for their efforts and Morelli herself was made Commodore, with
Commander Talen being given command of the base and Shoya offered the promotion to
Lieutenant Commander and XO. The engineer declined, pointing out he officially was
also to be demoted so the two would cancel each other out, and that his place was in the
core, not in operations.
Continuing for a while under his new commanding officer, Shoya enjoyed the momentary
respite and the calm of the aftermath, however the part of him that was forever freighter-
trash itched and forced him to ask for a transfer out of the station. Although it was a
difficult choice, and having to leave behind those he had fought beside for so long against
such an insidious foe, Shoya finally managed to get his request granted, and was given
the position of Chief Engineer for the next ship that passed his way.
